Solein can help achieve this by unlocking a world of new food diversity that is genuinely sustainable.
Solein is the world’s most sustainable protein with comparative greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 20% of plant protein and 1% of meat.
As long as we have air in the atmosphere and the sun in the sky we can keep producing Solein.
Consumers can be safe in the knowledge that the foods they buy will have a genuinely sustainable and fully natural protein source, which only uses renewable resources.
The production of protein in the next decades will change drastically with our factories that can provide a never-ending food supply.
As we move towards more sustainable plant-based diets, the role of innovative food sources like Solein becomes increasingly vital.
Solein, with its well-rounded macronutrient and micronutrient profile, is poised to address some of the nutritional gaps presented by plant-based diets while supporting a balanced and wholesome dietary regimen for future generations.*

While plant-based diets are adept at maintaining a healthy balance of fats and carbohydrates, the inclusion of microbial proteins like Solein can enhance this balance. Solein contributes beneficially with its content of unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fibers, without adding sugars or undesirable fats. It ensures that energy intake remains adequate, supported by its balanced provision of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Moving away from animal-based foods will lead to better cholesterol levels. Solein supports this benefit as it contains no cholesterol. Additionally, its high dietary fibre content aids digestion and complements the fibre-rich nature of plant-based diets.
One challenge with plant-based diets is the lower bioavailability of certain minerals like iron. Solein addresses this by providing a source of iron that may be more readily absorbed than plant-based iron. Moreover, protein intake, often a concern in plant-based diets due to lower quantities and incomplete amino acid profiles, is robustly supplemented by Solein. It provides all nine essential amino acids, enhancing the overall quality and balance of protein intake.
Adequate intake of certain vitamins and micronutrients — such as riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), vitamin B12, and D, along with iodine, zinc, calcium, potassium, and selenium — can be a concern in strictly plant-based diets. Here too, Solein plays a critical role by containing vitamins B12, B2, and B3, helping to ensure these nutrients are sufficiently represented in the diet.
With Solein, we can grow the unseen fruits of nature. Solein does not require land. The agriculture happens on a cellular level. There’s no slaughter of animals, cleared forests, pesticides, or fertiliser runoffs.
Factory 01, our first commercial-scale production facility in Vantaa, Finland, marks a significant milestone in sustainable, efficient food production.
This facility, a landmark project within the European hydrogen economy, is capable of producing as much protein daily as a 300-cow dairy farm, but within the hygienic confines of our state-of-the-art bioreactors.
Our sights are set on further expansion with Factory 02 and beyond.
As the world anticipates the wider availability of Solein, many are eager to know when and where they can purchase it.
With ongoing efforts to secure regulatory approvals across major markets including the EU, UK, and the USA, Solar Foods aims to introduce Solein to the United States by late 2024.
Singapore, a pioneer in food innovation, was the first to welcome Solein, granting approval for sales. This endorsement paves the way for broader global acceptance, with more regions expected to follow suit. Solein made its debut with an exclusive dinner to remember, captivating food enthusiasts with its versatility and sustainable profile.
The company behind Solein is Solar Foods Oyj, a Finnish food tech company established in 2017 to liberate global food production. We develop innovations and platform technologies to craft the future of food together with the industry’s leading brands.
